Green Card Marital Interviews: What Questions May Be Asked

The immigration law in the United States permits immediate family members, such as parents, spouses, and children who are under 21 years of age, to become permanent residents of the United States. However, when it comes to a green card marriage, it cannot be lawfully approved until both individuals undergo a very thorough interview. The reason behind this interview is to ensure that the marriage is indeed valid and is not for the unlawful purposes of allowing one individual into the country. It can help to prepare in advance for the interview by becoming familiar with some of the questions that may be asked.

Where Did the Both of You First Meet?

The person conducting the interview is going to want to find out how your relationship developed, and because of this, they are likely to ask when and where you both met for the first time. Keep in mind that many of the questions that will be asked during this interview will be of personal nature, such as when and how you fell in love with one another, where your first date took place, etc. However, it is imperative that your answers are honest and sincere.

What Was Your Wedding Ceremony and Reception Like?

The interviewer will want to find out as many details about your wedding and reception as they can get. For instance, they will want to know where and when your wedding took place, as well as how many people attended. The interviewer is likely to also ask about the color scheme of the wedding, how many tiers the wedding cake consisted of, and what song you danced to for your first dance.

How Did You Celebrate Your Birthday's This Last Year?

Since you are married, you should both be well aware of one another's birthdays. If you do not know when your spouse's birthday is, then this could be an issue. The interviewer may also want to know what you did to celebrate each other's birthdays this last year. Going beyond that, they may ask how you celebrated other holidays, such as Valentine's Day, Halloween, and Christmas. Make sure you are fully prepared to let the interviewer know which family you spent which holiday with, what you dressed up as on Halloween last year, and which restaurant you went out to eat at on Valentine's Day.

As you can see, it is very important to have the details down regarding your entire relationship. This can be incredibly stressful, but you don't have to do it alone.
